As if it were not getting tough enough with opposition to sea level rise popping up in San Francisco and North Carolina, now the TEA Party has taken on adaptation planning.  We are seeing opposition to "sustainability" measures at the local level throughout Virginia, as TEA Party opponents claim that these "sustainability" proposals are part of an international conspiracy to implement United Nations Agenda 21 and subvert private property rights.

Laughable?  Think again.

Roanoke, Albemarle County, New Kent County, Chesterfield County, Essex County, and Mathews County are all seeing disruptions and effective TEA party campaigns to roll back reasonable sustainability planning measures.

Mathews County is "Ground Zero"

Wetlands Watch took a special interest in the development of a long-range plan in Mathews County, Virginia, which faces serious sea level rise impact.  The county, after an exhaustive public discussion approved a plan that discusses the need to adapt to sea level rise - no regulation, no development restrictions, just planning.

Now the TEA party wants the plan repealed, claiming the UN is making little old Mathews County do its bidding.  And TEA party activists from around the state (and country) are networking and coming to Mathews to help out.

But there are also national interests working in Virginia, fueling this opposition.

As we go forward with our adaptation plans along the shoreline, we face an increasingly difficult task.  The challenge is to figure out how to work around it....
