Another in a continuing series of regional efforts to deal with sea level rise impacts -
this time in San Diego Bay. This effort has been underway for some time and involved a wide range of local, state, and federal government representatives. It is another model for regional planning for sea level rise and has a special lesson for eastern Virginia's work.
Like San Diego, Hampton Roads is built out, has many military facilities, lots of water-dependent businesses (ship repair, shipping, etc.) that cannot retreat from sea level rise, and beach-based tourism. Like much of the rest of eastern Virginia, there are many natural resource assets in this southern California region that need attention in adaptation efforts.
We have seen some stirrings on regional work in Virginia and this should help those efforts.
