Preparing for the Future with the City of Hampton

The City of Hampton is committed to creating water plans that cover neighborhood areas, with varying levels of risks, geographies, and community character. Wetlands Watch is proud to be part of the consultant team for the development of the Fox Hill, Grandview, & Harris Creek Water Plan, engaging in a 3 day workshop convening field-specific experts, Hampton staff, multisector stakeholders, and informed community members. Wetlands Watch led the third day of this 3 part workshop that focused on what policies are needed to implement the solutions identified in days 1 and 2 to reduce risk in the water plan area. In synthesizing these discussions, Wetlands Watch encouraged the workshop participants to look at potential implementation road blocks, rank solutions by feasibility and time scale, and note policy and legal needs before solutions can be deployed in the communities. This workshop and planning effort begins the long term planning for the unique risks associated with a portion of the city. Hampton’s localized planning approach is exactly what is needed to prepare people and the land for long term change.

The City of Hampton is tackling its present and future head on, ensuring that with input by the public and experts alike that the city is best prepared for the growing risk of sea level rise and increased rainfall. The city is leading in recognizing the variable character of its many neighborhoods and assessing risk, while providing an opportunity for creative thinking and open engagement with the public.
